Detroit inspires each of us in different ways. Did you fall in love with the music of the Belleville Three, Derrick May, Juan Atkins, and Kevin Saunderson? Was it Atkins’ work as Cybotron or Model 500 that first lit the fire? Did the explosive energy of Jeff Mills’ Live at the Liquid Room mix CD pull you in? Or was it the driving, hypnotic pulse of Robert Hood’s Minimal Nation that left you craving more? Maybe Richie Hawtin’s Decks, EFX & 909 moment on MTV’s 120 Minutes sent you headfirst down the Midwest mecca’s rabbit hole.
We’ve gathered many of our most influential mixes and releases into one expansive SoundCloud playlist. If you notice something missing, we’d love to hear from you—email us at 313@unabridged-sf.com and share your favorites. We’ll follow up with a future article highlighting your suggestions.
