Editor Note: This was written during the peak of the COVID-19 lockdown sitting in my bedroom in the Lower Haight, longing for normality and a place on a Movement Festival dance-floor. We are truly honored to host the 30th Anniversary celebration of the influential mixed CD March 6 at 1015 Folsom. Individual tickets on 1015.com. Weekender passes on ra.co.

My mind and heart are still in Detroit—and will be all weekend.
For my 9/10 most influential albums (in no particular order), I’ve selected Jeff Mills: Live at the Liquid Room. I purchased the CD at Amoeba Records shortly after moving to Oakland in ’98. It must have been an employee recommendation, because my tastes were definitely not refined enough to know who The Wizard was, who Jeff Mills was, or really anything about Detroit.
I was 20, and most of my exposure to electronic music came through mix tapes. Once I heard this mix, everything changed. Nothing would ever sound the same again. Suddenly, it all made complete sense.
If I hadn’t already been hooked on the culture, I was now fully in love with the music.
Sitting at home today, we’re all listening to streams—whether it’s No Way Back: Streaming From Beyond, Movement Electronic Music Festival, MUTEK SF Presents: NEXUS Experience, Virtual Industry Brunch, or another. I know I wouldn’t be sitting here in this moment if not for this mix.
